Tállya, the great town of the one-time historical wine region, the World Heritage Tokaj-Hegyalja has always been an emphasised trade centre on the Tokaj-Kosice- Tarnów Royal wine-path. Today, it is a wine-cultural skanzen, with its exceptionally rich built and cultural heritage in the traditional grapes and wine producing. It is also the geographical centre of Europe.
Lajos Kossuth, one of the heroes of the Hungarian freedom fights, was christened in the Evangelic chruch in 1802, and János Lavotta, the founder of the Hungarian verbunk music, is buried in the Catholic cemetery.
The Lion Wine Restaurant , Wine House and Hotel is situated in the 400 year-old Szirmay-Mansion, in Tállya. The mansion was re-built in 1771, by the biggest Austrian architect of that era, Franz Anton Hillebrandt (the head architect of the Hungarian Royal Chamber commissioned by Maria Theresa). That is when the mansion got it’s significant features.
The present milieu of the mansion shows the bourgeois, enlightened life-style of the historical town by the authentic Hegyalja-style. 15 handicrafts worked on the present mansion.
The Lion Wine Restaurant is, now one of the basics of the Tokaj-Hegyalja wine tourism. It’s winged oak-gate with the lion head knockers opens to the wonderful world of wine and gastronomy.
The Lion Wine-Restaurant in Tokaj-Hegyalja is one of the pioneers in the gastronomical reformation, using quality local ingredients, with its seasonal offers, and by mixing traditional and modern culinary technologies. This was confirmed by the visit of „The Chef of the Century”, Eckart Witzigmann, who had lunch in the Lion Wine-Restaurant as part of his Hungarian tour, invited by the Hungarian State.
