The Order of Friars Minor Conventual, commonly known as the Conventual Franciscans have always had wineyards in Arad-Footfills, Romania since 1724. The quality of the wine produced here have always been in competition with wines from other wine-districts from the 19th century. Due to the special micro-climate, in certain years, kadarka is able to get bothrytised in Arad-Foothills. In early days, red aszú from Ménes was more precious than Tokaji Aszú. Kadarka is a traditional type of grapes in Arad-Foothills. This balcanic origin type became a “national treasure”, and Hungarian costumers buy it regularly.
Kadarka collects little tannin, its wine is rich in acids. The more transparent colour, and the slimmer body get compensated by the spicy smell, the smooth structure and the acids. The real concentrated kadarka is exciting, friendly, velvety and elegant. Its main flavours are gingerbread spices, nutmeg and fresh cherry.
The effects of the Adriatic climate is appreciable in Arad-Foothills, on the way to Ménes. This incomparable climate, and the vulcanic, slaty rocks give a real special red wine in the Ménes wine-district, so kadarka is more concentrated, darker and tastier here.
The red wine produced by the Conventual Franciscans – Wine of the Clerks – always meant the best quality.
The Order of Friars Minor Conventual got back their wineyards in Arad-Foothills, and with the support of Father Ernő, they revivified the Conventual Franciscans’s Estate.
