Wine, Shine …Bénye – Festival in the gardens of Erdőbénye

 7th August 2010

Tokaj wines, tastes of the Zemplén, Erdőbénye winemakers, the cream of local Tokaj-Hegyalja restaurants, church concerts, jazz, folk and world music, play area, sheep chasing, tea house, music for young and old

The gardens of Erdőbénye are open to visitors during the Wine, Shine …Bénye festival which presents the culture of this historic wine region as those living here imagine it can and will be. Wander around the pleasant streets of the village, pop in to meet the winemakers and sit in their gardens tasting local foods and wines while listening to music. Experience some of the magical atmosphere this land has to offer. Each venue has its own unique feeling, a colourful cavalcade and real characters and this is what combines to create Wine, Shine ...Bénye.

Wines of Tokaj, tastes of the Zemplén. We hold the foods of the Zemplén Hills, the local tastes, in equal regard to the excellent wines made from the grapes that thrive on the surrounding hills. It is our dream that the mushrooms growing in the Zemplén forests, the jams made from the abundant local fruits, wild thyme gathered on the nearby meadows, and a local speciality, Swabian-cured bacon, will be just as widely available as a bottle of excellent wine along with the locally-produced sheep and goat cheeses. Of course we are also open to the wider world too and to all it has to offer. We believe that while preparing both the raw ingredients and the dishes themselves we can also draw freely on new developments and ideas from other regions and areas of the world.

In 2009, the first time we organised the Wine, Shine …Bénye festival, we invited gastrobloggers so they could redefine the traditional dishes of the Zemplén and Tokaj-Hegyalja. This year it is the turn of the leading local restaurants so we can discover how they interpret the local cuisine and the tastes of the Zemplén.

A wide range of music events awaits too. Yes, you will have to walk a little to find them but we promise it’ll be worth it: acoustic guitar, folk songs, church choir concert; several jazz concerts, including Viktor Tóth, and the Hot Jazz Band. Just as last year, we expect many children too so the Wine, Shine…Bénye family events are also important to us. There will be a Vilmos Gryllus concert, crafts, clowns and traditional games for our younger guests.
